You're reading Writing Your Wedding Vows

Wedding vows are the promises each partner speaks to the other during the ceremony. Personal vows are written by the couple rather than read from a set text, and most run one to two minutes aloud. This book companion points to the free tools for planning the rest of the wedding around them.

Quick answer

Write your vows from the book; it is the complete vow guide we offer. For the rest of the wedding, the Dream Wedding Operations Suite ($39) holds the seating, budget, timeline and checklist files. It does not contain vows: there is no vow-writing product on this site. The free next step is the planner builder or the printable checklist, to give the vows a deadline.

What is the free next step?

Put the vow deadline on your plan. Open the free wedding planner builder, add your date, and give the vows a target date a few weeks before the wedding so there is time to read them aloud and trim them. The builder asks for an email address to open; you can unsubscribe at any time.

If you prefer paper, the free printable wedding checklist lets you write a line for the vows, an owner and a date, next to every other task.

  • ✓ Free wedding planner builder (opens with an email address)
  • ✓ Free printable wedding checklist
  • ✓ Free wedding day timeline guide, to place the vows in the ceremony

What do the paid files cover, and what do they leave out?

The paid files are planning tools: a seating chart maker, a budget spreadsheet, a wedding day timeline and a dated checklist. None of them contains vow templates, vow examples or vow prompts, and buying them adds nothing to the book.

The timeline is where the ceremony order lives, including when the vows are read. The checklist is where the vow deadline sits with every other task.

  • ✓ Wedding Checklist PDF: $9, dated planning checklist
  • ✓ Dream Wedding Operations Suite: $39, all four planning tools
  • ✓ No vow templates, examples or prompts in either

How do readers use the book and the free tools together?

Write the vows from the book. Use the free planner or the printable checklist only to give the vows a deadline and a place in the ceremony, so they are finished before wedding week.

On the day, the ceremony order in the wedding day timeline shows when the vows are read, which helps the officiant and anyone holding the cards.

  • ✓ Book: drafting and editing the vows
  • ✓ Free planner or checklist: a vow deadline weeks before the day
  • ✓ Wedding day timeline: when the vows are read in the ceremony

Questions couples ask

Frequently asked questions

Is there a vow template I can buy here?

No. There is no vow-writing product on this site and the planning suite does not contain one. The book is the whole of what we have on vows, and it is enough to write them.

When should our vows be finished?

Many couples aim to finish a few weeks before the wedding, so there is time to read them aloud, time them and trim them. Put that date on your plan so it does not slide into wedding week.

Then why offer the planning suite on this page?

Because the vows are one task among many. If you are planning the rest of the wedding yourselves, the suite holds the seating, budget, timeline and checklist files. If you only came for the vows, the book is all you need.
